WordPress Multisite or Separate Installs?

Closely related sites sharing plugins and users under one multisite network, versus genuinely independent sites kept as separate installs

The Real Tradeoff

Multisite's core value is centralized management — one WordPress core installation and (optionally) one shared plugin/theme set serving multiple sites, with network-level user management. This genuinely reduces maintenance overhead for closely related sites, but it also means every site on the network shares the same underlying WordPress core version and is affected by the same server-level issues, which is a meaningful coupling risk for sites that should otherwise be independent.

When Multisite Makes Sense

  • A network of closely related sites under one organization (regional versions of the same brand, a university's many department sites) that genuinely benefit from shared plugin management and centralized user administration.
  • Sites that will largely use the same plugin/theme stack, since multisite's efficiency gains come from that shared infrastructure, not from running completely different setups per site.
  • A team managing many sites who values centralized update management over the flexibility of per-site independence.

When Separate Installs Are Better

  • Genuinely independent sites (different clients, different owners, different purposes) that shouldn't share infrastructure or risk profile with each other.
  • Sites needing very different plugin sets or configurations, where the shared-infrastructure model of multisite adds constraint rather than convenience.
  • A desire to isolate risk — a compromise or serious issue on one site under multisite has more potential to affect others on the same network than a genuinely separate installation would.

Making the Decision

  1. Assess how closely related the sites actually are in ownership, plugin needs, and desired independence.
  2. Weigh centralized management convenience against the coupling risk multisite introduces.
  3. When in doubt for genuinely independent sites, separate installs are usually the safer default.
