Static Site Generator or WordPress?

The Real Tradeoff

A static site generator builds every page in advance as plain HTML files, which then serve directly with no database query or PHP processing needed per visitor request — genuinely fast and simple to host, but every content change requires rebuilding and redeploying the site, a workflow that suits a developer far more naturally than a non-technical content editor used to WordPress's live editing interface.

When a Static Generator Genuinely Wins

  • A small site updated infrequently, maintained by someone comfortable with a git-based, developer-oriented publishing workflow rather than a traditional CMS interface.
  • Pure performance and hosting simplicity matter more than content-management convenience — a static site can be hosted extremely cheaply and reliably with minimal server requirements.
  • No need for ecommerce, user accounts, comments, or other dynamic, per-visitor functionality that inherently requires server-side processing per request.

When WordPress Remains the Better Choice

  • Frequent content updates by non-technical staff genuinely benefit from WordPress's live, in-browser editing experience, which a rebuild-and-redeploy static workflow doesn't replicate as conveniently.
  • Any ecommerce functionality (WooCommerce specifically) requires the dynamic, database-backed architecture WordPress provides, which a purely static site fundamentally can't support on its own.
  • The vast plugin ecosystem WordPress offers for nearly any functionality need has no equivalent breadth in the static site generator world, where most functionality needs custom development instead.

Making the Right Choice

  1. Assess actual content update frequency and who manages it before considering a static approach.
  2. Rule out static generators immediately if ecommerce or significant dynamic functionality is needed.
  3. For most business sites needing ongoing content management, WordPress remains the more practical default.
