The Real Tradeoff
A theme's native customization (Customizer options, block patterns, full-site editing features in a modern block theme) is built specifically for that theme and generally kept lightweight, since it doesn't need to support every possible layout scenario a general-purpose page builder does. A page builder trades some of that efficiency for significantly more visual design freedom and a generally easier, more direct editing experience for non-technical users.
When Each Makes More Sense
- A content-focused site (a blog, a documentation site, a simple business site) with modest layout needs often does fine with a modern block theme's native tools, avoiding the extra weight a page builder adds.
- A marketing-heavy or highly custom-designed site benefits more from a page builder's flexibility, particularly if a non-technical team needs to build varied, visually distinct landing pages regularly.
- Performance sensitivity matters more for some sites (a store prioritizing checkout speed) than others, which can tip the decision toward the lighter native approach even if it means somewhat less design flexibility.
- Long-term maintenance risk is real for page builder dependency — a site built heavily around a specific builder's proprietary elements can be more work to migrate away from later than one using more standard block editor content.
Making the Right Choice
- Assess actual design flexibility needs against performance sensitivity for the specific site.
- Consider who will be doing ongoing content editing and which approach suits their comfort level and needs.
- If choosing a page builder, be deliberate about not over-relying on it for every single page if some content works fine with lighter-weight tools.
