How Do I Tell If a WordPress Repository Plugin Is Safe?
Why No Single Signal Is Enough
The WordPress.org repository's initial review process checks for basic code quality and security issues at submission time, but it doesn't continuously audit every plugin forever afterward, and a plugin can be abandoned by its developer long after initial approval while remaining listed and technically installable.
What to Actually Check
- Last updated date — a plugin not updated in over a year is a real warning sign, both for security patching and for compatibility with current WordPress/PHP versions.
- Active install count — a widely used plugin (tens of thousands of active installs or more) has effectively more real-world scrutiny than an obscure one with a handful of installs, though this alone doesn't guarantee quality.
- Review ratings, and specifically recent reviews — an overall good rating built on old reviews can mask more recent problems, so checking review dates matters as much as the rating itself.
- Support forum activity — a developer actively answering questions and addressing reported bugs signals ongoing maintenance commitment much more reliably than the listing page alone.
- Requested permissions/capabilities that seem disproportionate to the plugin's stated purpose are worth questioning before installing.
A Practical Pre-Installation Check
- Check last updated date, install count, and recent reviews together before installing anything new.
- Review the support forum for developer responsiveness and any unresolved, concerning issues.
- Test on staging first, regardless of how good these signals look, before activating on a live site.
