Can a Customer Change WooCommerce Subscription Quantity?
How It Works
A subscription's line items, including quantity, can be edited directly from its admin screen the same way you'd edit a regular order's line items — changing the quantity there updates the recurring total that future renewals will charge. This is an admin action, not something exposed to the customer through My Account by default.
What's Not Handled Automatically
- Proration for a mid-cycle change. Editing quantity partway through a billing period doesn't automatically calculate a prorated charge or credit for the remainder of that period — the new quantity just applies from the next renewal onward unless you build proration logic explicitly.
- Self-service quantity changes. A customer wanting to add or remove units themselves needs either a compatible extension or custom development adding that capability to My Account, since it isn't there natively.
- Notification of the change. An admin-side quantity edit doesn't automatically email the customer confirming the new total — worth doing manually or building into any custom self-service flow, so customers aren't surprised by a changed charge.
Handling It Properly
- For an occasional, admin-handled quantity change, editing the line item directly works, but confirm the new recurring total is correct before saving, and consider notifying the customer of the change.
- For proration on a mid-cycle change, that needs to be calculated and applied manually (a one-time adjustment order) or through custom logic — it isn't automatic.
- For genuine self-service quantity changes at scale, that's the same territory as seat-based billing covered separately — worth treating as one connected feature rather than two.
