Can a Customer Renew Their WooCommerce Subscription Early?
How It Works
With early renewal enabled, a customer sees a "Renew Now" option in My Account before their subscription's actual due date. Paying through it processes a normal renewal order immediately and recalculates the next payment date from that new payment, rather than from the original schedule — the subscription effectively shifts forward rather than stacking an extra period on top.
Why Stores Use It
- Customers who want to "lock in" before a known upcoming price increase, paying at the current rate before it changes.
- Gift or budget-planning purposes, where a customer wants to pay ahead of a specific date for their own reasons (before travel, before a budget cycle closes, and so on).
- Reducing failed-renewal risk for customers who know their card details are about to change and want to get ahead of it manually.
Things to Check
- Confirm early renewal is enabled on the specific product (or variation) if the option isn't showing up for customers who expect it.
- Test the schedule shift explicitly before relying on it — renew early on a test subscription and confirm the next payment date moved correctly rather than a duplicate charge appearing on the original date too.
- Consider whether early renewal fits products with a synced billing date (see subscription syncing) — the two features can interact in ways worth testing together, since a synced date might not shift the same way an unsynced one does.
- Decide if a proration discount should apply for renewing early, if the intent is a smaller reward for paying ahead rather than the full recurring price — that's not automatic and needs custom logic if wanted.
See custom WooCommerce development for early-renewal incentives or discounts beyond what the built-in feature supports.
