Why Aren't My WooCommerce Variations Showing?

How WooCommerce Generates Variations

WooCommerce treats "having an attribute" and "having variations based on that attribute" as two genuinely separate steps — an attribute can exist purely as descriptive product information without ever becoming a selectable variation option, which is intentional but easy to overlook when setting up a variable product for the first time.

Common Causes of Missing Variations

  • The attribute not marked "Used for variations" in the product's Attributes tab, the single most common cause of variations simply not appearing at all.
  • Variations never generated after adding or changing attributes — the Variations tab has a specific "Generate variations" action that needs to be run, since this doesn't happen automatically.
  • The product type itself not set to "Variable product" in the Product data dropdown, still left on "Simple product" despite attributes being configured.
  • Individual variations set to a status that excludes them (out of stock and hidden from the frontend, for instance), making them technically exist but not display as purchasable.
  • A caching issue serving a stale version of the product page from before variations were properly configured.

How to Make Variations Appear

  1. Confirm the product type is set to "Variable product."
  2. Check the Attributes tab and confirm the relevant attribute(s) are marked "Used for variations."
  3. Go to the Variations tab and generate variations if they haven't been created yet, or regenerate after an attribute change.
  4. Check each variation's individual status and stock settings.
  5. Clear any caching after making changes.

A checklist in the order WooCommerce needs

  1. Product type. In the Product data box, confirm it says Variable product.
  2. Attribute setup. On the Attributes tab, each attribute needs "Used for variations" ticked, and its values added and saved.
  3. Variations generated. On the Variations tab, run Generate variations after adding or changing attributes. Existing variations don't update themselves.
  4. Each variation's own settings. Open the variations and check each is enabled, has a price and, if you manage stock, has stock. A variation with no price is not purchasable and may not show at all.
  5. Published and cached. Save or update the product, then clear the page cache and view it in a private window.

When only some options are missing

If a size or colour appears for some selections and not others, look at the variations behind the missing combinations. They are often disabled, have no price, or are out of stock. The store's "hide out-of-stock items" setting only hides an out-of-stock variation from the dropdown when stock is managed at the variation level and backorders are off, so check how stock is managed on that product. The "Any" option in a variation also changes which combinations match, so check how each one is set.
