What Do WooCommerce Catalog Visibility Options Control?
The Four WooCommerce Options Explained
These settings control discoverability, not purchasability — even a "Hidden" product remains a fully functional, purchasable product at its own direct URL, it just won't be found through normal browsing or search. This distinction matters for use cases like a product only meant to be linked directly (from an email campaign, a specific landing page) without appearing in general catalog browsing.
Common Use Cases for Each
- "Shop and search results" is the correct default for the vast majority of products meant to be normally discoverable.
- "Search results only" suits a product you don't want featured in general category browsing but should still surface if a customer searches for it specifically by name.
- "Shop only" is less commonly used but could suit a product meant to be browsable in its category context without being a top search result for unrelated queries.
- "Hidden" fits a product only meant to be accessed via a direct link — an exclusive offer, a product still being finalized but needing a working purchase link for internal testing, or a legacy product kept purchasable for existing customers with the link but not promoted generally.
Using These Settings Correctly
- Default to "Shop and search results" unless there's a specific reason to restrict discoverability.
- Use "Hidden" deliberately for direct-link-only products, understanding it doesn't prevent purchase, only browsing/search discovery.
- Review visibility settings periodically if products seem to be missing from expected listings, since this is a common, easily overlooked cause covered in more detail elsewhere.
