How Each WooCommerce Type Works

A simple product is the default and most straightforward type — one price, one stock quantity, no customer decisions to make beyond quantity. A variable product starts from one or more attributes (defined at the product or global level) marked "used for variations," and each combination of attribute values (a specific size and color pairing, for instance) becomes its own variation with independently configurable price, stock, weight, and image.

When to Use Each

• A simple product fits anything sold as-is, with no customer-facing options to choose between — a single-format book, a fixed-configuration item.
• A variable product fits anything genuinely offered in multiple customer-selectable options with potentially different pricing or stock per option — apparel with size/color, a product available in multiple pack sizes.
• Overusing variable products for something that doesn't actually need per-option pricing or stock tracking adds unnecessary admin complexity — if every variation has the same price and stock behaves identically, a simple product with a note, or attributes without variations, may be simpler.
• A large number of variations (many attributes combined) can become unwieldy to manage manually, worth considering a bulk-variation-management plugin or tool for catalogs with many combinations.

Choosing the Right Type

1. Use simple products by default, reserving variable products for genuine customer-selectable options.
2. Define attributes clearly before generating variations, to avoid needing to restructure later.
3. Consider bulk-management tools for products with a large number of variation combinations.
