WooCommerce Bundle vs. Grouped Product: The Difference
How Each WooCommerce Type Actually Works
A Grouped Product is one of WooCommerce's core product types, acting as a container that lists other existing simple products together on a single page — a customer sees each item with its own price and a quantity field, and can choose to add any combination of them to the cart, each as its own separate cart line item at its own price. A Bundle, which requires a dedicated bundling plugin since it isn't a built-in product type, packages multiple items into what functions as one single product: one price, one cart line item, and typically a discount reflecting the value of buying the set together rather than piece by piece.
Choosing the Right One
- Use a Grouped Product when showcasing related items customers might want to mix and match, each purchased and priced individually — a "starter kit" page where someone might only want two of the four listed items.
- Use a Bundle when the intent is a single fixed-price package sold as one unit — a "starter kit" sold as one product at one discounted price, regardless of whether the customer would have wanted each piece separately.
- Stock and reporting differ too: a Grouped Product's individual items track their own stock and appear separately in sales reports, while a Bundle's component tracking depends entirely on how the specific bundling plugin implements it.
- A Bundle generally supports a genuine bundle discount more naturally, since it's priced as a single unit; replicating a true bundle discount with a Grouped Product needs a separate discount mechanism layered on top.
Setting Either Up
- For a Grouped Product, create it as a product type directly in core WooCommerce and link the existing simple products you want listed together.
- For a Bundle, install a dedicated bundling plugin and configure the specific items, pricing, and any discount for the combined package.
- Match the choice to the actual buying intent you want to support — flexible mix-and-match versus one fixed package.
