Does WooCommerce Clean Up Abandoned Pending Orders?

How WooCommerce Automatic Cleanup Works

The "Hold stock (minutes)" setting under WooCommerce → Settings → Products → Inventory controls how long an unpaid order holds its reserved stock before being automatically cancelled, via a scheduled Action Scheduler task checking for and cancelling orders that have exceeded this window. This prevents indefinite stock reservation from checkout attempts that were never completed, which would otherwise make products appear artificially unavailable to other genuine customers.

Things Worth Knowing

  • This cleanup relies on Action Scheduler running reliably, the same background processing system covered elsewhere — if scheduled tasks aren't running, this automatic cleanup won't happen either, leaving stale pending orders accumulating.
  • The hold time is a store-wide setting, not configurable per product, so it needs to balance giving legitimate slow checkouts (a customer stepping away briefly) enough time against not holding stock too long for genuinely abandoned attempts.
  • Only orders actually reserving stock are affected by this specific mechanism — other cleanup (like draft order expiration) operates on its own separate timing and logic.
  • Cancelled-via-cleanup orders still exist as records, just with Cancelled status, rather than being deleted outright, preserving them for any later analysis of abandonment patterns.

Checking and Adjusting This

  1. Review the current Hold stock setting under Settings → Products → Inventory, adjusting if it doesn't match the store's actual checkout patterns.
  2. Confirm Action Scheduler is running reliably, since this cleanup depends on it.
  3. Periodically review accumulated Cancelled orders from this automatic process as a useful abandonment-pattern signal.
