Why Did My Site White Screen After an Elementor Update?

Why This Happens

Major Elementor releases occasionally change internal functions or class structures that other themes and add-on plugins directly hook into, and if one of those hasn't been updated to match, calling a function that no longer exists (or exists differently) triggers a fatal error, and WordPress often shows a blank white screen instead of the actual error unless debug mode is enabled.

Common Causes

  • An outdated theme built around an older Elementor version, not yet updated for compatibility with the new release.
  • An outdated add-on widget plugin calling an Elementor function or class that changed or was removed.
  • A PHP version too old for the new Elementor release's minimum requirements.
  • A corrupted update from a connection interruption during the update process itself, leaving some files partially updated.

How to Fix It

  1. Enable WordPress debug mode (or check the host's error log directly) to see the specific fatal error and the file it points to.
  2. Access the site via FTP or file manager and rename the identified conflicting plugin's folder to deactivate it if the admin is inaccessible.
  3. Update the conflicting theme or plugin to its latest version, or temporarily roll back Elementor to the prior working version if no fix is yet available.
  4. Confirm the server's PHP version meets Elementor's current minimum requirement.
  5. Re-download and reinstall Elementor if the update itself seems to have been corrupted.
