Why Starting From Scratch Rarely Pays Off
A production-quality WordPress theme needs to correctly handle dozens of template hierarchy scenarios, accessibility considerations, and compatibility edge cases that established themes and starter themes have already solved and tested extensively. Rebuilding all of this from a completely blank slate duplicates a huge amount of already-solved work, for benefit that's usually much smaller than the effort invested, unless there's a genuinely unusual requirement driving that decision.
The Practical Middle Ground
- A minimal starter theme (built specifically as a clean, unopinionated development foundation rather than a full design) gives genuine custom design freedom while still inheriting solid, tested WordPress fundamentals underneath.
- A well-regarded existing theme, customized via a child theme (covered elsewhere) is often the fastest path for a design that doesn't need to be entirely unique, adapting an established design to specific branding and content needs.
- Truly custom-from-scratch development makes sense mainly for a highly distinctive design or interaction pattern that no reasonable adaptation of an existing theme could achieve, and where the team has the time and expertise to properly handle everything an established theme would have covered.
- A block theme built with full-site editing in mind is a middle path worth considering too, offering substantial design flexibility through the Site Editor without needing traditional from-scratch PHP template development.
Deciding the Right Approach
- Start from a starter theme or a well-built existing theme as the default approach.
- Reserve fully custom-from-scratch development for genuinely unique requirements that justify the additional effort and risk.
