WordPress Block Editor or Classic Editor?
The Real Difference
Classic Editor provides a single large text area with a toolbar, similar to a word processor, while the block editor treats every piece of content — a paragraph, an image, a button, a whole section — as an individually editable and rearrangeable block. This block model is also what full-site editing, block patterns, and most new WordPress features are built on top of, which is why staying on Classic increasingly means missing out on newer capability rather than just having a different editing feel.
What to Check Before Switching
- Plugins with deep Classic Editor integration (some older SEO or page-builder-adjacent plugins) may need checking for block editor compatibility before a full switch.
- An established content team's workflow built entirely around Classic's interface has a real (if temporary) retraining cost worth planning for, not dismissing.
- A site already using a full page builder (Elementor, for instance) for most content design may see less immediate benefit from switching, since the page builder handles layout regardless of which underlying editor is active.
- The Classic Editor plugin remains officially supported for now, so there's no urgent forced-migration pressure, but new WordPress capability increasingly assumes the block editor as the default.
Making the Decision
- Check plugin compatibility with the block editor for anything critical to the current workflow.
- Trial the block editor on a staging copy with real content before committing to a full switch.
- Plan for a short retraining period if switching an established content team over from Classic.
