What's the Difference Between WordPress.org and .com?

Self-hosted WordPress.org software offering full control, compared to WordPress.com's managed hosting service with plan-based restrictions

The Core Distinction

Confusingly, both share the WordPress name and underlying software, but they represent genuinely different things: WordPress.org is where the actual WordPress software, plugins, and themes are freely distributed for anyone to download and self-host anywhere. WordPress.com is a commercial hosting company (run by Automattic) that hosts WordPress sites for you, with its own plans, restrictions, and pricing structure layered on top.

Why This Distinction Matters Practically

  • A self-hosted WordPress.org site (installed on a hosting provider of your choice) can use any plugin or theme from the vast open ecosystem, including WooCommerce, with no platform-imposed restrictions beyond what your own hosting supports.
  • WordPress.com's lower-tier plans block custom plugin installation entirely, which rules out WooCommerce and most custom functionality unless upgrading to their Business or higher plans specifically.
  • A WordPress.com Business plan or above does allow plugin installation, closing much of the practical gap, but still operates within WordPress.com's own managed environment rather than offering the full server-level control a self-hosted install provides.
  • Most serious ecommerce or highly customized sites use self-hosted WordPress.org specifically for this reason — unrestricted plugin access and full control over hosting and configuration.

Choosing the Right Option

  1. For any serious ecommerce or custom functionality need, self-hosted WordPress.org gives the necessary flexibility.
  2. For a very simple blog with no plugin needs, a WordPress.com plan can be a reasonable, lower-maintenance option.
  3. If already on a restrictive WordPress.com plan and needing more flexibility, migrating to self-hosted WordPress.org is the standard path forward.
