How Do I Track WooCommerce Subscription Revenue in GA?

Why This Happens

Google Analytics' Enhanced Ecommerce (and GA4's purchase event) tracks a completed transaction as a purchase, full stop — it has no inherent concept of "this purchase is a renewal of an existing subscription" versus a brand-new sale. WooCommerce's own tracking integrations generally don't add that distinction either, since it's specific to WooCommerce Subscriptions rather than core WooCommerce.

Why This Matters

  • Revenue trends become misleading if new-customer growth and existing-customer renewals are indistinguishable — a store could look like it's growing purely from renewals while new acquisition has actually stalled.
  • Marketing attribution gets muddled. A renewal order attributed to whatever channel/campaign parameters happen to be present at that browser session (which may have nothing to do with how the customer originally found the store) can distort channel performance reporting if not filtered out.
  • Customer lifetime value calculations in Analytics undercount or miscount if recurring charges aren't clearly tied back to the original acquisition event.

How to Get an Accurate Picture

  1. Add a custom parameter to the purchase event specifically on renewal orders (via a hook checking whether the order is a subscription renewal) so Analytics reports can filter or segment by it.
  2. Use WooCommerce Subscriptions' own built-in reports for recurring-revenue-specific figures rather than trying to reconstruct them from general Analytics ecommerce data — they already separate signups, renewals, and cancellations correctly.
  3. Exclude or clearly label renewal-order revenue in any custom Analytics dashboard or Looker Studio report built for marketing attribution, so channel performance isn't skewed by charges that had nothing to do with a specific campaign.
  4. For deeper cohort or lifetime-value analysis, consider exporting subscription data via the REST API into a dedicated analytics tool built for recurring-revenue metrics, rather than stretching Google Analytics beyond what it's designed to distinguish.
