WooCommerce Manual vs. Automatic Subscription Renewal
Why This Happens
WooCommerce Subscriptions doesn't itself process payments — it delegates that to whichever gateway the customer chose at checkout. Gateways that support storing a reusable payment token (Stripe, most direct-integration gateways) enable automatic renewal. Gateways that don't support tokenized recurring charges (standard PayPal Standard, offline methods like bank transfer or cheque) fall back to manual renewal: an order is still generated on schedule, but the customer has to actually complete payment on it.
Side by Side
| Automatic Renewal | Manual Renewal | |
|---|---|---|
| Customer action required | None — charged automatically | Must click a payment link and pay |
| Typical gateways | Stripe, most direct-integration card gateways | PayPal Standard, bank transfer, cheque |
| Failed-payment retry system applies | Yes | No — there's no charge to retry |
| Risk of lapsed access | Lower — renews unattended | Higher — depends on the customer remembering to pay |
| Reminder emails | Optional, mostly unnecessary | Important — WooCommerce sends a renewal-due notice |
Common Causes of Confusion
- Assuming it's a per-subscription setting. It isn't — it's determined by the gateway used at the original checkout, and generally can't be changed on an existing subscription without switching payment method entirely.
- A subscription unexpectedly on manual renewal. Usually means the original payment method doesn't support tokenized recurring billing, even if the store also accepts other, automatic-capable gateways.
- Renewal reminder emails not being sent for manual subscriptions. Check WooCommerce → Settings → Emails — the "Customer Renewal Invoice" email specifically covers this and is easy to have accidentally disabled.
What To Do About It
- To move a subscription from manual to automatic, the customer needs to update their payment method to one that supports automatic renewal — there's no admin toggle that converts it directly.
- To reduce manual-renewal lapses, confirm the Customer Renewal Invoice email is active and consider adding an earlier reminder before the due date, since manual renewal depends entirely on the customer noticing and acting.
- To push more customers toward automatic renewal, that's a checkout-design decision — making a tokenized gateway the clear default option reduces the number of subscriptions that end up on manual renewal in the first place.
