What Is a WooCommerce External/Affiliate Product?

How WooCommerce External/Affiliate Products Work

Setting a product's type to "External/Affiliate" replaces the normal checkout flow with a single configurable button and URL field — no cart, no payment processing, no order created on your own site for that purchase at all. The product page can still have full descriptions, images, and reviews like any other listing, but the actual transaction happens entirely on the linked external site.

Common Use Cases

  • Affiliate marketing, where the store earns a commission for referring customers to a purchase completed on a partner or marketplace site, without handling payment or fulfillment itself.
  • A curated "gift guide" or comparison-style catalog pointing to products actually sold by various other retailers, common for content-focused or review-oriented sites.
  • A product not yet available for direct sale on the store itself but sold through a specific partner temporarily, using this as an interim listing type.
  • Not appropriate for anything meant to be sold directly through the store, since it bypasses the store's own checkout, order tracking, and payment processing entirely.

Setting One Up

  1. Set the product type to "External/Affiliate" in the Product data dropdown.
  2. Enter the external URL and customize the button text appropriately.
  3. Disclose the affiliate relationship clearly if commission-based, per applicable disclosure regulations (FTC guidelines in the US, for instance).
