Cross-Sells vs. Upsells in WooCommerce
Why the Timing Difference Matters
These aren't just two labels for similar functionality — they're deliberately placed at different points in the customer's decision process. An upsell on the product page tries to influence which specific item gets chosen in the first place ("customers who viewed this also considered this better option"), while a cross-sell on the cart page assumes the primary choice is settled and instead suggests something complementary to add to it ("customers who bought this also bought this accessory").
Setting Up WooCommerce Cross-Sells and Upsells
- Upsells work best genuinely offering something better — a higher-quality version, a bundle with more value — rather than just any other product, since the goal is influencing toward a better purchase, not just displaying more items.
- Cross-sells work best as genuinely complementary items, things that naturally pair with what's already in the cart (batteries with an electronic device, a case with a phone), rather than unrelated products.
- Both are manually configured per product in the Linked Products tab, meaning thoughtful curation matters more than simply linking as many products as possible.
- Overloading either section with too many suggestions can overwhelm rather than helpfully guide the customer — a small, well-chosen set tends to perform better than an exhaustive list.
Making Both Work Together
- Configure upsells with genuinely better alternatives in the product's Linked Products tab.
- Configure cross-sells with genuinely complementary items for the cart page.
- Keep both lists curated and relevant rather than exhaustive.
