Why Aren't Saved Cards Showing at WooCommerce Checkout?
How WooCommerce Stores Saved Cards
A saved card at checkout isn't the actual card number stored anywhere on the site — it's a secure token issued by the payment gateway, tied to both the specific customer account and that specific gateway's tokenization system. If any part of that chain breaks (tokenization disabled, wrong account, wrong gateway), the saved method simply won't appear, with no error to explain why.
Common Causes of Missing Saved Cards
- Tokenization/"save payment methods" not enabled in the gateway plugin's own settings — this is usually an explicit setting, not on by default in every case.
- The customer checked out as a guest previously, then logged into an account later — guest checkout doesn't create a saved token tied to any account, so there's nothing for a subsequent logged-in session to retrieve.
- The card was saved under a different, previously active gateway — switching gateways (Stripe to a different processor, for instance) doesn't migrate saved tokens, since they're gateway-specific by design.
- The saved token expired or was revoked on the gateway's side (a replaced physical card, for instance), which WooCommerce has no way to detect proactively — it simply won't show until the customer saves a new one.
- A caching or session issue serving a logged-out version of the checkout page even though the customer is actually logged in.
How to Restore Them
- Confirm tokenization is enabled in the active gateway's settings.
- Test as a genuinely logged-in customer on a fresh browser session, ruling out a caching/session display issue.
- Check which gateway the original card was saved under if a gateway switch happened recently — customers will need to save a new card under the new gateway.
- Ask the customer to try saving a new card if the old token may simply have expired or been revoked.
