How Do I Control How My Elementor Design Looks on Mobile?

An Elementor design adjusted independently for desktop, tablet and mobile breakpoints through the editor's device preview switcher

How Breakpoint Overrides Work

Elementor's responsive settings follow a cascading, mobile-adjustment model rather than requiring three fully separate designs — a setting configured on desktop applies everywhere unless specifically overridden at a smaller breakpoint, and an override at tablet size cascades down to mobile too unless mobile has its own separate override. This means most elements only need adjustment at the specific breakpoint where something actually needs to change.

Common Adjustments Needed

  • Column stacking, since multi-column layouts generally need to stack vertically on smaller screens rather than staying side by side and becoming cramped.
  • Font sizes and spacing, which often need reducing on mobile to avoid oversized text or excessive whitespace relative to the smaller viewport.
  • Hiding elements entirely, using the responsive visibility settings, for content that genuinely doesn't belong on smaller screens (a large decorative background element, for instance).
  • Custom breakpoints (an Elementor Pro feature) let you define additional breakpoints beyond the three defaults, useful for designs that need finer control across a wider range of device sizes.

Adjusting Responsive Design Properly

  1. Switch the editor's device preview to each breakpoint and review how the design actually looks.
  2. Adjust only what needs changing at each breakpoint, relying on the cascade for everything else.
  3. Use responsive visibility settings to hide elements that shouldn't appear on specific devices.
  4. Test on actual devices, not just the editor's preview, before considering the responsive design finished.
