How Do Elementor Popups Work and When Do They Display?
How Popups Are Built and Triggered
A popup starts as its own template type under Templates → Popups, designed with the regular Elementor editor including any widgets, including the Form widget for capturing signups. Separately from the design, the popup's Settings panel controls its triggers (what causes it to appear) and its advanced rules (frequency, delay before it can reappear for the same visitor), while its display conditions control which pages or post types it's eligible to show on at all.
Common Trigger and Timing Options
- On page load, either immediately or after a configurable time delay, common for newsletter signup offers.
- On exit intent, detecting when a visitor's cursor moves toward closing the tab or browser, often used for last-chance offers.
- After scrolling a set distance down the page, useful for showing an offer once a visitor has engaged with content.
- On click, triggered by a specific button or link elsewhere on the page rather than automatically.
- Frequency and cookie-based rules prevent the same popup from reappearing too often for a visitor who already dismissed or converted on it.
Setting Up a Popup
- Create a new popup template under Templates → Popups and design it visually.
- Configure the trigger and advanced rules in the popup's settings to match the intended behavior.
- Set display conditions to control exactly which pages the popup is eligible to appear on.
- Test across devices, since a poorly timed popup can hurt mobile experience and search rankings if it's overly intrusive.
