How a Custom 404 Template Works

Once created and published with its display condition set to 404 Page, the Theme Builder template takes over any time WordPress would otherwise show its default not-found response, replacing the theme's plain version site-wide. It's designed with the same visual editor as any other page, giving full control over layout and content rather than being limited to whatever customization the active theme's own 404 template allows.

What a Good 404 Page Includes

• Clear, friendly messaging confirming the requested page wasn't found, without being overly apologetic or confusing.
• A search bar, helping a visitor who mistyped a URL or followed an outdated link find what they were actually looking for.
• Links to key pages (homepage, popular categories, main navigation) giving the visitor an obvious next step rather than a dead end.
• Consistent branding and design matching the rest of the site, rather than the jarring plain-text default many themes fall back to.

Setting This Up
