Since WordPress 5.5, core automatically generates a basic XML sitemap accessible at /wp-sitemap.xml, covering posts, pages, and other public content types without requiring any plugin. This built-in version is intentionally basic, though, lacking some of the finer control (excluding specific content, custom priority settings, image sitemap inclusion) that a dedicated SEO plugin's sitemap feature typically offers.
Why Most Sites Use a Plugin's Version Instead
- SEO plugins (Yoast, Rank Math, and similar) generate their own more configurable sitemap, typically replacing core's default automatically once activated, with finer control over what's included and excluded.
- WooCommerce-specific considerations (excluding certain archive types, handling product variations correctly) are usually better handled by a dedicated SEO plugin's WooCommerce-aware sitemap logic than core's generic implementation.
- Submitting the sitemap to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools directly (rather than just having it exist) is the step that actually helps search engines discover and prioritize crawling it, and is worth doing explicitly rather than assuming it'll be found automatically.
- A sitemap doesn't guarantee indexing — it helps discovery and crawling efficiency, but search engines still make independent decisions about which pages to actually index and rank.
Making Sure This Is Set Up Well
- Confirm a sitemap exists (check core's default or a plugin's generated version) and is accessible.
- Submit it explicitly to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
- Use a dedicated SEO plugin's sitemap if finer control over inclusion/exclusion is needed, particularly for a WooCommerce store.
