How Does Switching Subscription Plans Work in WooCommerce?

Why This Happens

WooCommerce Subscriptions treats different variations of the same subscription product (monthly vs. annual, or Basic vs. Pro) as switchable if the store owner explicitly allows it. Once enabled, a customer can change plans from their My Account page, and the plugin calculates what's owed or credited based on how much of the current billing period is unused — rather than simply starting a brand-new subscription and leaving the old one to keep billing separately.

Common Causes of Problems

  • Switching not enabled on the product. It's off by default and has to be turned on per-product under Product data → Subscription → "Allow Switching."
  • Proration settings not matching store expectations. WooCommerce → Settings → Subscriptions has separate proration controls for upgrades and downgrades — a store expecting automatic prorated credit needs this explicitly configured, not just switching itself enabled.
  • Variations not actually set up as a subscription with compatible billing schedules. Switching works best between variations of a single subscription product; trying to switch between two entirely separate subscription products isn't the same feature and needs custom logic.
  • Custom checkout or cart logic interfering. A heavily customized cart/checkout flow can sometimes not carry through the switch-specific order line items correctly.

How to Fix It

  1. Confirm switching is enabled on every variation involved, not just one side of the switch.
  2. Review the proration settings under WooCommerce → Settings → Subscriptions and decide deliberately what the store's policy should be — full proration, no proration, or prorate only for upgrades.
  3. Test the full switch flow on a staging copy before relying on it live, including what the customer actually sees at checkout when switching, since proration messaging can be confusing if not reviewed.
  4. For switching between genuinely separate products (not just variations), that requires custom development — WooCommerce Subscriptions' built-in switching assumes variations of one product by design.

See custom WooCommerce development for a switching setup that goes beyond what the built-in feature covers, such as cross-product upgrades or custom proration rules.
