Why Did My WooCommerce Renewal Shipping Cost Change?

A shipping cost line item recalculating differently on a later subscription renewal order

Why This Happens

Each renewal order runs through WooCommerce's normal shipping calculation at the time it's created, the same as tax, using whatever zones and rates are active then and the customer's currently saved shipping address. Nothing about a subscription's shipping cost is fixed at signup and carried forward unchanged.

Common Causes

  • A genuine shipping rate or zone change made on the store's side since the last renewal.
  • The customer's shipping address changed, moving them into a different shipping zone with different rates.
  • Free-shipping thresholds tied to order total, if the subscription's price changed (a price increase, a coupon expiring) and that pushed the order above or below a free-shipping cutoff.
  • A shipping plugin or carrier-rate integration updating its own rates independently of anything changed directly in WooCommerce settings.
  • Product weight or dimensions changed if the subscription includes a physical product and its shipping-relevant details were edited.

How to Fix It

  1. Compare shipping zone/rate settings at each renewal's date against what's configured now, to confirm whether the change is expected.
  2. Confirm the customer's saved shipping address matches what they expect — an address change explains a shipping difference that otherwise looks like an error.
  3. Check any free-shipping threshold logic if the subscription's total changed for another reason (coupon expiry, price increase) and shipping shifted as a side effect.
  4. For a live carrier-rate integration, check that service's own logs for the rate actually returned on the renewal in question.
