Does WooCommerce Subscriptions Support Multiple Currencies?
How It Works
A subscription stores its recurring amount as a number, tied implicitly to whatever currency the store (or the currency-switcher plugin) was displaying at checkout. Renewals continue billing that same stored amount — they don't automatically convert to a different currency later, even if the store's currency-switching setup or exchange rates have changed since.
Where This Gets Complicated
- Currency-switcher plugins vary widely in subscription support. Some are explicitly built to be compatible with WooCommerce Subscriptions and lock in the checkout currency correctly for renewals; others weren't designed with recurring billing in mind at all and can cause a renewal to charge in the wrong currency or fail outright.
- Payment gateway currency support matters independently — even with a compatible currency switcher, the actual payment gateway needs to support processing (and, for automatic renewals, storing a reusable token) in each currency offered.
- Exchange-rate-based switchers (that convert a base price on the fly, rather than storing genuinely separate prices per currency) need particular care with subscriptions, since a renewal recalculating against a live exchange rate can produce a different charge than the customer originally agreed to.
- Reporting across currencies gets more complex once multiple currencies are genuinely in play — revenue reports need to account for this rather than just summing raw numbers across different currencies.
What to Check Before Relying on It
- Confirm the specific currency-switcher plugin explicitly states WooCommerce Subscriptions compatibility, rather than assuming general WooCommerce compatibility covers it.
- Test a full subscription lifecycle — signup, at least one renewal, and a payment-method change — in a non-base currency before launching, since renewal behavior is where multi-currency setups most often break.
- Confirm the payment gateway itself supports the currencies involved, independent of the currency-switcher plugin.
