Do I Need WooCommerce Subscriptions If My Gateway Bills?

A recurring billing relationship existing entirely inside a payment gateway, invisible to the WordPress site itself

Why This Comes Up

Many payment gateways (Stripe and PayPal among them) offer their own native recurring billing products, entirely independent of WooCommerce. It's technically possible to set up a recurring charge directly through the gateway's dashboard or API without WooCommerce Subscriptions being involved at all — but that leaves the entire relationship living outside WordPress, which has real consequences for how the rest of the site can use that information.

What You Lose Without WooCommerce Subscriptions

  • No My Account subscription management for the customer — they'd need to manage the recurring charge through the gateway's own customer portal, if one exists, rather than your site.
  • No WooCommerce order history tied to each renewal, making reporting, support, and refunds harder to handle from inside WordPress.
  • No hooks for the rest of the site to react to renewals or cancellations — granting access, updating a user role, or triggering an email all need building from scratch against the gateway's own webhook system instead of WooCommerce Subscriptions' established hook set.
  • No unified reporting across subscriptions if the store also sells one-time WooCommerce products — recurring revenue would live entirely in the gateway's dashboard, separate from the rest of the store's data.

When Going Gateway-Native Might Actually Make Sense

  1. A very simple, low-touch recurring charge with no need for customer self-service, WooCommerce reporting, or integration with the rest of the site's content/access logic.
  2. A case where the recurring relationship is managed entirely through a separate system anyway (a SaaS product with its own billing dashboard, for instance), where WooCommerce is only loosely connected to begin with.
  3. For anything beyond that — a real subscription business wanting reporting, customer self-service, and integration with the rest of a WordPress/WooCommerce site — WooCommerce Subscriptions is almost always the more maintainable choice, even though the gateway's native recurring billing is technically capable of processing the charges on its own.
