How It Works
A product can be configured as both bookable (through WooCommerce Bookings) and a subscription (through WooCommerce Subscriptions) at the same time, letting a customer subscribe once and receive a recurring booking slot tied to the billing cycle — a weekly class pass or a monthly recurring appointment, for example. Each successful renewal can be configured to generate the next booking in the sequence.
What Needs Careful Testing
- What happens to already-booked future slots if the subscription is cancelled or paused. This isn't automatic in every configuration and needs explicit testing — a cancelled subscription that leaves stale future bookings on the calendar causes real scheduling confusion.
- Availability conflicts if a renewal tries to book a slot that's since become unavailable (double-booked, or the provider's availability changed) — the failure handling here needs to be clear to both the customer and the business.
- Failed payment retry periods overlapping with booking dates. If a renewal payment is retrying, does the customer still get the booking provisionally, or is it withheld until payment clears? This is a business decision that needs deliberate configuration, not a default to assume.
- Rescheduling a specific occurrence without affecting the whole subscription's ongoing schedule — a customer needing to move just one week's appointment shouldn't have to touch the entire subscription.
Setting It Up Properly
- Test the full lifecycle — signup, a normal renewal generating the next booking, a failed payment, and a cancellation — confirming the calendar behaves correctly at each stage.
- Decide and document the cancellation-and-future-bookings policy before launch, then confirm the actual behavior matches it.
- Check availability-conflict handling specifically, since this is the scenario most likely to need a manual resolution process for staff.
