How Do I Set Up Local Pickup in WooCommerce?

Setting Up WooCommerce Local Pickup

Since Local Pickup is added at the shipping zone level like any other method, it can be scoped to a specific zone (a local city or region, for instance) rather than being available to every customer regardless of location, which matters since pickup obviously only makes sense for genuinely local customers able to actually visit the pickup location.

Practical Considerations

  • Scope Local Pickup to a genuinely local zone, rather than a broad or worldwide zone, since offering it to customers who can't realistically use it just adds checkout confusion.
  • Communicate the pickup location and hours clearly, either in the method's description field or through separate page content, since WooCommerce's core Local Pickup method doesn't include a built-in way to display an address or map.
  • Multiple pickup locations (for a business with more than one physical site) typically need a dedicated pickup-locations plugin, since core WooCommerce only supports a single generic Local Pickup method per zone.
  • Combine with in-person payment options (pay at pickup) if relevant, configured separately through payment gateway settings.

Adding Pickup to a Zone

  1. Go to the relevant shipping zone under Settings → Shipping and add the Local Pickup method.
  2. Set a cost if a handling fee applies, or leave it at zero for free pickup.
  3. Add clear pickup location and hours information in the method description or elsewhere on the site.
  4. Consider a dedicated plugin if multiple pickup locations need to be supported.
