How WooCommerce Shipping Classes Work
Shipping classes are created under WooCommerce → Settings → Shipping → Classes, then assigned to individual products via their Shipping tab. A Flat Rate method's cost settings include per-shipping-class fields, letting a specific class add an extra charge, define a completely separate cost, or even be excluded from a rate entirely, independent of the base rate applied to standard products.
When Shipping Classes Are Worth Using
- Genuinely heavier or bulkier products that cost noticeably more to ship than the store's typical item, needing a surcharge rather than absorbing the extra cost.
- Fragile items requiring special packaging, where the shipping class reflects that added handling cost.
- Oversized items that may exceed a carrier's standard rate tier, needing a distinctly higher shipping charge.
- A small, uniform catalog where every product ships similarly generally doesn't need shipping classes at all — they add configuration complexity that's only worthwhile once genuine cost variation exists between products.
Setting Up Shipping Classes
- Create the needed shipping classes under Settings → Shipping → Classes.
- Assign each class to the relevant products via their individual Shipping tab settings.
- Configure per-class rates within each zone's shipping method settings.
