Can I Partly Capture a WooCommerce Pre-Authorization?

How WooCommerce Partial Capture Works

An authorization reserves a specific amount, but capture doesn't have to claim that entire amount — most card networks allow capturing any amount up to (but not exceeding) what was originally authorized. Whatever isn't captured is simply released back to the customer's available balance once the authorization expires (or immediately, depending on the gateway).

Where This Actually Matters

  • Split shipments, where one or more items in a multi-item order become unavailable after the order was placed — capturing only for the items that actually ship, rather than the full original amount, avoids the need for a separate refund step.
  • Weight- or quantity-adjusted orders in some industries (food, bulk goods) where the exact final amount isn't known until fulfillment, making an authorize-then-adjust-capture flow more accurate than a fixed upfront charge.
  • Not every gateway's WooCommerce integration exposes this, even when the underlying gateway API supports partial capture — this needs specific confirmation rather than assuming it works because the concept is common industry-wide.
  • Multiple partial captures against a single authorization are sometimes possible but often more restricted (a single capture only, in many integrations) — worth testing the specific limits before relying on it for a complex fulfillment workflow.

Setting This Up

  1. Confirm partial capture support specifically in the WooCommerce integration being used, not just the gateway's general API documentation.
  2. Test the exact split-shipment scenario on a staging environment, confirming the captured amount and the released remainder both behave as expected.
  3. Build the capture trigger into the fulfillment workflow (triggered when a shipment is confirmed, for instance) rather than relying on a fully manual process.
