Should WooCommerce Add iDEAL or Other Local Methods?
Why Local Methods Matter More in Some Markets
Card payment adoption for online purchases varies significantly by country — in the Netherlands, for example, iDEAL (a direct bank-transfer method) is the dominant way consumers pay online, with card payment a distant second for many demographics. Offering only card payment and PayPal to Dutch customers means missing the payment method a large share of them actually prefer or exclusively use, regardless of how well-optimized the rest of checkout is.
Deciding Whether It's Worth It for WooCommerce
- Check actual order data by country before adding anything — a store with negligible traffic from a specific region gets little benefit from adding that region's local payment method, however popular it is locally.
- Checkout abandonment specifically from that region (if trackable) is a stronger signal than raw order volume alone — high traffic but low conversion from a specific country often points directly at a payment-method mismatch.
- Most major gateways bundle several local methods together (Stripe and Mollie both support many European local methods through one integration), so adding several relevant ones isn't necessarily much more setup work than adding one.
- Each additional payment method adds a small amount of checkout complexity for everyone, not just the customers who use it, so this isn't a purely additive decision — a long list of rarely used options can hurt more than it helps.
How to Decide and Implement
- Review order and traffic data by country to identify whether a specific market justifies a local payment method.
- Check whether the current gateway already supports the relevant local methods before assuming a separate integration is needed.
- Consider showing local methods conditionally based on detected customer location, rather than cluttering checkout for everyone with options irrelevant to most.
