Should WooCommerce Checkout Require a Phone Number?
The Actual Tradeoff
Every required field at checkout adds a small amount of friction, and the phone number field specifically is one some customers are hesitant to provide, expecting marketing calls or texts they don't want. Weighed against that is a genuine operational benefit for shippable orders: couriers frequently need to reach a customer about access issues, missed deliveries, or address clarification, and not having a phone number on file removes that option entirely.
When WooCommerce Should Require a Phone Number
- Physical/shippable products generally benefit from requiring it, given how often couriers need a fast way to reach the customer — the operational value tends to outweigh the small conversion friction.
- Purely digital or virtual products with no delivery to coordinate have much less need for it, and requiring it anyway is pure friction without the corresponding benefit.
- Clear communication about why it's needed (a short note like "needed in case of a delivery issue") can reduce hesitation compared to an unexplained mandatory field.
- SMS order notifications, if the store offers them, are a legitimate additional reason to collect a phone number, separate from the delivery-contact use case.
Deciding for a Specific Store
- Base the decision on whether the store ships physical products that could genuinely benefit from a delivery-contact phone number.
- If requiring it, add a brief explanation near the field rather than leaving it unexplained.
- For digital-only stores, consider making it optional or removing it entirely to reduce unnecessary friction.
